WHY? @ The Luminary Arts

The Luminary Arts closed its doors to both their 2012 Elevator Music Concert Series and their time at the corner of Reber with a performance by the quirky folk-rap group WHY? and the equally mishmash pairing of Naytronix and The Black Swans as openers.

Random Notes:

-Black Swans’ frontman Jerry DeCicca kept reminding me of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, which was made even more entertaining with the band’s low-key and sober folk songs.

-Naytronix is Nate Brenner of tUnE-yArDs and it was a nice surprise to see Merril Garbus also present that evening hanging out at the merch table and enjoying the show. It still cracks me up that Nate and the drummer were rocking these matching party shirt designs, but guitarist lost his and was left wearing a normal button-down shirt.

-The crowd was REALLY into WHY? with the front rows immediately busting out their nodding once the band launched into their set.

-Yoni of WHY? found an old piano and decided to record this Frank Ocean cover.

-I really appreciate the hospitality of James and Brea McAnally in letting me come out to shoot shows for the Luminary Arts over these last two years. Even though it might be some time until the return of the Elevator Series, I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the Cherokee location.
