-I was incredibly bummed to miss The Mynabirds’ show at The Firebird over the summer and having them as the opener was a great perk. With their musical intensity and Laura Burhenn’s statuesque presence, I expected The Mynabirds to be stand-offish, but I was completely wrong and Burhenn’s casual talk between songs gave a friendly warmth to balance the intensity of their songs. While leaving, the band was eating a post-show dinner upstairs and I stopped by to let them know how much I loved Generals and Laura graciously introduced herself. (In a total fanboy moment, I totally regret not having gone back to pick up a vinyl to get their autographs.)
– With his latest album Shut Down the Streets fresh on the shelves, the crowd was treated to a healthy dose of new material by the generally reserved A.C. Newman. His performance maintained a subtle enjoyment throughout, not one that blows you away, but one that makes you think “Man, that was a good night” after the show. I’m not well-versed in my New Pornographers catalog, but as I’ve seen the various members perform solo material, I think I’m drawn the most to Newman’s simple pop leanings.
Photo Notes: Table seating at the Duck Room always seems to throw a dilemma into shooting. It often leaves space up front to navigate, but makes it impolite to do anything other than crouch for high angled shots. Other than that, it wasn’t particularly enjoyable shooting: The Mynabirds had nice clean lights to start but quickly requested them to be dimmed and Newman suffered from bland colored lighting.
