Young the Giant‘s return to St. Louis was a huge change from their last stop at the Firebird, with the band’s popularity skyrocketing over the last year. Brighter lights, bigger stage, bigger crowd, with the same killer melodies intact.
GROUPLOVE‘s opening set was…wow. Their debut album already had its hooks in me, but it was their infectiously fun stage presence that completely won me over. Seriously, I cannot wait for these guys to come back to St. Louis on their own headlining tour. I can see them throwing a great party in a smaller venue like the Firebird.

No R. Kelly covers, but the band still did their best in putting on a tight show for the sold-out venue. Yes, they ended with “My Body,” but more importantly, attendants had the chance to hear some new songs from the group, including “What You Get.” Singer Sameer Gadhia rocked his old school mic with ease and the rest of his bandmates dropped hooks to keep the pit dancing.
The strobes and brilliant light show were the surprise MVP of the performance, with all of the back lighting adding an interesting sense of depth to all of the pictures. I’ll certainly take lights like this any night.
