While Kid Cudi was off doing his thing on the Main Stage, British singer-songwriter Ellie Goulding arrived at the Ad Astra Stage to enchant the crowd with her ethereal pop songs. Between playing SNL and Prince William and Kate Middelton’s wedding reception, Ellie’s had a pretty awesome year and with all of that acclaim, her set was one of my most-anticipated sets of Day 1.
The Good: Her album, Lights, has been on constant rotation here after Kanrocksas. It’s a little bit of pop with electro and folk touches.
The Bad: Even though she stood mostly front and center, her performance was frustrating to shoot. A drum kit blocked off a lot of her left side, she’d constantly let her hair cover her eyes and face and the setting sun was now peeking through the back of the stage ready to blow out tons of angles.
The Irrelevant: Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and members of Doomtree were both hanging out stage-side to check out her set.
