Finally, my first chance to see and shoot The Flaming Lips had arrived. Human hamster ball? Check. Dancing Wizard of Oz Dorothy troupe? Check. Video camera attached to the microphone projecting to the stage-high backdrop behind the band? Check. Excess confetti? Double check. Let’s party.
The Good: So much to pick from, but one moment that really sticks out was Wayne coming out before the show to deliver a safety heads up about the lighting and human hamster ball. Less “get out of here if you’re going to have a problem with this” and more “we just want to make sure you have the best concert experience tonight.”
The Bad: There was so much going on, I probably didn’t even focus on shooting the actual band members (besides Wayne) as much as I would have liked. Not having my 14-24mm lens.
The Irrelevant: Hours before the festival had even begun, a few of us hung out by Stageasaurus Rex to watch the band diligently working on stage setup. Pretty cool to see a band of such big stature still involved in the details.
