The Decemberists @ The Pageant - 04.27.11

The King is Dead. Fortunately the sold-out Decemberists show played out more like a triumphant remembrance than dour mourning.

Shot for Eleven Magazine.

Photography notes: I think I’ve shot enough shows to say that sometimes concert photography boils down to being in the right place at the right time. This Decemberists shoot felt like the complete opposite of that, where I always feeling like I had chosen the wrong lens or side of the stage for the moment. Frontman Colin Meloy was an easy subject to shoot, but his bandmates were spread across the stage with Sara Watkins as far back as drummer John Moen and multi-instrumentalist Jenny Conlee hidden away behind the keyboard. And even though a bright lighting setup helped illuminate some of those farther away, the lighting always seemed to be at its moodiest whenever my 80-200mm lens was attached. As well, I missed out on all those Colin Meloy guitar poses at the front of the stage, having chosen the wrong times to walk over to the sides to shoot. It was one of those nights where I was able to land a few good shots, but really was hoping to have gotten a lot more.

Random notes:

-Best wishes to Jenny Conlee who recently announced that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

-Our friend Katie over at Speakers in Code had the great privilege of attending the Decemberists soundcheck earlier that afternoon. Another Katie over at RFT’s A to Z blog also wrote a review of the show (with Encores Jason taking pictures). Both are much more qualified to elaborate on the evening, so go forth and check those out.

Thanks for reading. Head over here for the full photo set.
