I was still running on a few hours of sleep from the Big K.R.I.T. show the previous night, so the thought of back-to-back night concerts wasn’t super appealing to me on the drive over to The Firebird to see Gold Motel. Turns out, their show was exactly what I needed with a relaxed and intimate crowd and some sweet tunes.
The evening started with a little bit of a scramble with the scheduled opener dropping off the bill at the last minute and newly anointed 2011 RFT – Best Female Solo Artist Nominee Morgan Nusbaum stepping up to the plate. I’ve heard of Morgan (and her band Bruiser Queen) for some time and have been meaning to check them out and it seemed like she made a few new fans that night.
As for Chicago’s Gold Motel, the story as to why I chose to go to the show is a bit…silly. It’s not because I was a prior fan of The Hush Sound. No, it’s because I saw this promo pic on the venue’s website and just thought, “Wow, that looks like a fun band to see!” (Seriously, not a joke.)
Turns out that the tone conveyed by the photo is spot on. Gold Motel is FUN indeed, with a warm pop sensibility that had some folks dancing, both old and young, and the rest of the crowd smiling and nodding along. If the songs they shared that night is indicative of the material on their album, Summer House, then you definitely need to go out and pick it up as a great addition to your summer music rotation. This stuff is the soundtrack of carefree summer nights, running around with friends you love and the memorable adventures with them.
Photography notes: Super easy set. Solid lighting that was very doable with f2.8. As well, band members generally stayed within a fixed zone making for easy isolation shots.
