If you missed #6 – #10, head over here first!
You might be wondering, “Why didn’t you have [insert band] on the list?” Just to clear up the confusion, here’s a Top 5 list of shows that I didn’t go to this year:
5. St. Louis Secret Sound Festival
4. Black Keys
2. Vampire Weekend
…Onward to our list!
More guitar tricks in 1 minute than some bands have all night. Also: guitar splits.
Beast Rest Forth Mouth is already majestic enough, but the live performance took the material to another level
I’m kind of cheating, but the performances were so intertwined that the sets became one grand experience. Sexy nuns, funky pirates, killer fish robots, a shower of feathers to end the show – you know, the usual for an Of Montreal show. Adding Janelle’s hyper R&B set as an opening act made for possibly the best 1-2 punch this year for concerts.
Possibly the craziest show I’ve ever seen. Funny thing is that I still can’t name any of their songs, but I can tell you which band member vomits, which one hung from the ceiling while still playing guitar, which one used a broken bottle to play slide guitar and which one played the guitar with his junk.
A near perfect mix of whimsy, weirdness and heart. On paper, songs about dog walking, being pen pals with a dragon and mustaches sound ridiculous, but the Michigan trio played with a sincerity that made their folky pop completely infectious.
So that’s my Top 10 favorite concerts for 2010. Looking forward to seeing what 2011 has to offer!
