Can you keep a secret? I’m one of the few that really didn’t go gaga after hearing Janelle Monáe’s album, The ArchAndroid. I appreciated the ambition and enthusiasm, but aside from a few tracks, I didn’t really connect with the album as a whole. But let me tell you, even if you felt the same – go SEE Janelle Monáe!
Taking a cue from her Of Montreal tour mates, Monáe’s show is set up as an experience complete with video introductions, sexy nuns and funky pirate extras, painting time and of course Monáe herself. Her funky Beyoncé meets James Brown persona blew away most of those in attendance that night at The Pageant, whether fighting zombies Matrix-style or showcasing her dance moves around the stage. All of it left me with a huge appreciation for her theatrics AND her talents.
At the end of the year when I’m mentally compiling my favorite concerts of the year, I’m certain Ms. Monáe’s name will come up.
-Even though something seemed off during her duet with Kevin Barnes, the way the two play off each other is really sweet.
-She’s worn this same tuxedo-esque outfit in every appearance I’ve seen, which strangely led me to wonder how many of these outfits she has and how they dry clean them during the tour travel.
-Apparently I missed the big cutout of her in the store expressing that her performance is to be viewed start to finish and that latecomers may not be admitted into the theater. Curious if that gets enforced.
