Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin @ The Firebird - 8.31.10

I get the impression that many local music fans have a soft spot in their hearts for the Springfield, MO indie pop group, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. So, it only seemed natural that the band would choose to kick off their massive tour (multiple months, multiple countries, multiple alternate universes) right here in St. Louis at The Firebird to promote their latest album Let It Sway (Polyvinyl). I’ll admit that even though Let It Sway has been getting some hype on the blogosphere and features probably the coolest cover I’ve seen this year, I went into the evening being a novice of the band and their new material.

The new album title seems to really capture the tone of their live show (presuming you’re like me and you imagine a scene of reeds swaying in the wind).  Even at their loudest, SSLYBY always seem to retain a sense of calm, less concerned about winning the crowd over with forced charisma or rock star poses and more focused on just playing good music. It’s that simple sincerity that won me over.

More notes and pictures after the jump.

Random Notes:

-Are we coming close to the point where some SSLYBY fans don’t know who Boris Yeltsin is?

– I definitely want to listen to Let It Sway now.

Apparently the band needs a new van. Feel free to help out. The band has enough for a new van. But still feel free to help out and get cool stuff.

-The crowd wasn’t quite as large as I had anticipated. Maybe not enough time since their last appearance in January at The Billiken Club?

-It was like every single local photographer was at that show last night. I’m happy to know such a fun and talented group. As well, I’m pretty sure the crowd was wondering what was the deal with all the photographers.

-From a music perspective? Cool band name. From a photo watermarking perspective? Horrible band name.

-Were you there? What did you think?

  1. they had 140 paid, which is actually quite good since it’s a) tuesday; b) not a free show and c) school just started. the billiken club shows are more crowded because they draw from on-campus bodies. and they generally do two STL shows a year.

    🙂

and yes – Let it Sway is awesome!

  2. Corey, if you would have let me ride on your shoulders or in the baby bjorn like we talked about, we could have decreased the photographer space taken up.
