I definitely worried whether anyone would even show up to catch the Magic Kids in-store set at Vintage Vinyl, considering LouFest was going on. But to my surprise, the place had a small crowd gathered to catch the Memphis group supporting their recent release named after the Tennessee city.
More pics and fun notes after the jump.
-For anyone who went, the first thing you probably noticed as the really interesting demographic at the show – either kids under 25 or older adults…well over 25. Apparently a bunch of the drummer’s relatives came out for the in-store. Probably the coolest thing I’ve seen in a while to see all these adults decked out in Magic Kids shirts and taking pictures/video. The guy in the picture above is the drummer’s grandfather, proudly showing off his new Magic Kids album.
-The lead singer really reminded me of Jarvis Cocker. Something about his lankiness and way he carried on as the frontman.
-The set was a little rough, plagued by broken bowstrings, feedback and awkward song starts at times. Hopefully, they’ll work out the kinks as they keep headlining shows on this massive two-month tour. But don’t get me wrong, their music and live show is charmingly fun and cute when the band is on their game.
-In case you missed out, they’ll be coming back 11/17 at The Firebird.
