We last saw the California-based Yellow Red Sparks opening during ZZ Ward’s previous trip through STL, but this time the trio was headlining their own tour and show at the Gramophone. Earlier that afternoon, YRS stopped by Vintage Vinyl for a great in-store mini-set and meet & greet with fans.
Josh Ritter @ Vintage Vinyl } 04.20.13
As Josh Ritter took the makeshift stage outside of Vintage Vinyl for Record Store Day 2013, the applauding crowd was packed in tightly and doing its best not to spill out onto the Delmar streets. In a day full of great music across town, this was definitely the highlight.

Matt Costa @ Vintage Vinyl } 04.24.13
In a nearly 45 minute in-store session, Matt Costa treated the audience at Vintage Vinyl to a preview of new songs he’d later showcase at The Firebird that evening. Be sure to check out his S/T album released earlier this year and check out more pics from the session below.

Denison Witmer @ The Firebird w/Owen Pye } 04.06.13
With one more week until Denison Witmer’s new album is released on Asthmatic Kitty, it seemed like a good time to showcase some shots from his appearance earlier in the month at The Firebird. Backed by Noah and Abby Gundersen (sorry, had to leave before their set), Witmer is a great recommend for those who enjoy William Fitzsimmons (in attendance) and his blend of gentle songs and humorous crowd banter.
Local solo artist, Owen Pye opened the show, drawing a nice crowd and being a super stand out guy for running all over the place trying to track down Witmer’s merch guy so I could buy a record.
Quick Preview: Josh Ritter @ Vintage Vinyl
Record Store Day 2013 was a fantastic day across St. Louis and I parked myself at Vintage Vinyl for most of the day. I wasn’t seeking after any RSD releases, but just took in the sounds of guest DJs inside, bands outside and the general camaraderie with other music lovers in the city. Oh yeah, and the stellar Josh Ritter performed a set outside for a crowd spilling onto the Delmar streets.
Here’s a quick pic of him post-performance. Be sure to head over to the KDHX website for a first look at pictures and we’ll be back here later in the week with more photos and a recap.
IO Echo @ The Pageant } 04.09.13
IO Echo has been on a tear lately, having last come through opening for Bloc Party and most recently supporting Garbage on their current tour. Minimal lights made for a challenging shoot, but managed to capture their dark and ethereal sound.
The Joy Formidable @ Pop’s w/Guards, Kitten } 04.01.13
With the release of the stellar Wolf’s Law, The Joy Formidable included Pop’s on their recent tour, bringing along Guards and Kitten for the tour. The action of the Welsh trio was barely contained on the stage and thanks to the fine folks over at Speakers in Code, I had a spot up front to bring back some pictures of the evening.
